Industry Introduction/ Business Information

Choppers Landscaping and Masonry is part of the service sector in that there is high customer contact, a short response time, is labor intensive, and the quality is not easily measured. Landscaping companies are typically LLCs or S Corporations and owned by a small number of people. The landscaping sector has grown over the past 10 years and the market has increased in the state of New Jersey. Those in this industry provide various lawn care and maintenance to residential and commercial markets. New Jersey nonresidential construction has increased as well as residential housing, causing an increase in the demand for this industry sector.

Choppers is a small to midsize company compared to others in this sector. In comparison to others servicing Union and Monmouth counties it does relatively well for itself and has a steady clientele. As stated previously, the market has now been saturated with illegal companies to make up for the increase in demand. The illegal companies hurt legal, fully insured companies such as Choppers. Many companies come and go in this sector, making it difficult for some businesses to keep a steady clientele who might switch between landscaping companies.

Choppers Landscaping and Masonry is a registered S Corporation that was originally formed in 2009 and at the time, serviced only Union County and had 40 customers. Choppers focused on basic lawn care including landscaping, fertilizing, and leaf cleanup. Now, the company is owned by three main principals who split the profit and losses evenly. Choppers has expanded into hardscaping, which includes the use of pavers to create decorative outdoor kitchens and other spaces and currently has 300 customers. Choppers currently uses subcontractors to complete hardscaping projects, whereas they previously used their employees. This switch contributed to an initial increase in capital.

In 2010, Choppers acquired properties in Monmouth County and currently services 120 customers there. The remaining 180 customers that Choppers services are in Union County. Choppers also does snow removal for three commercial properties which are in Union, Monmouth, and Middlesex Counties. Choppers has 11 employees who are paid hourly, with wages ranging from $16-22 based on experience and duration working at the company.

Currently, Choppers relies on QuickBooks for keeping track of data entry and billing information. Quickbooks provides quarterly and yearly financial statements for the company which are crucial for the tracking of profit and loss within the company.
